Originally built in 1940 as the University Library, in 1959, after an undergraduate library was built, it became the graduate library. In 1976 when Thomas Cooper Library was renovated to become the main library, the building transformed to the McKissick Museum. It currently serves as the visitor's center for the University as well. It's the only 20th century building on the Horseshoe at the University of South Carolina. McKissick houses the permanent collection of the university and has rotating shows.
