Rutledge College is the original, and at the time, the only building when the University of South Carolina first opened in 1805 after being founded in 1801 as South Carolina College. Located on what is known as the Horseshoe, it was the chapel, library, lecture hall, dormitory, faculty housing, and laboratories. Initial enrollment for the college was 9 students. It housed about 50. It was destroyed by fire in 1855 then rebuilt immediately. The building was originally called South Building but was later named for John Rutledge (1739-1800), a governor and education advocate for South Carolina who also served in the House and the Senate. His brother Edward was a signer of the Declaration of Independence.
Rutledge College is now the Department of Religious studies, a residence hall and the Chapel where many students have been married. The university is now 359 acres with a main campus enrollment of over 34,000 students.
